Grid-to-Cell Safety
Safety is designed in from the cell upwards. Each NOVA system undergoes more than 100 electrochemical and mechanical safety tests, covering cell, pack, and system-level performance.
-
Cell-level protection:
Rigorous drop, acupuncture, short-circuit, and charge–discharge tests verify that cells remain stable under extreme stress, preventing thermal runaway and lithium precipitation.
-
Pack-level protection:
Every pack is sealed within a steel enclosure and validated through a 72-hour seawater-immersion test, ensuring no pack-to-pack diffusion and controlled venting of smoke and pressure directly outside the enclosure.
-
Electrical protection:
Multi-layer over-current safeguards include proactive and passive isolation through circuit breakers, fuses, and active protection circuits.
-
System safety:
Comprehensive environmental monitoring integrates heat, smoke, and CO sensors with intelligent fire-suppression systems, directional exhaust flues, and NOVA-specific dual fire-control measures — combining NOVEC 1230 clean-agent and water-sprinkler systems.
-
Grid safety:
A dual-stage PCS architecture ensures constant power output and prevents reverse current flow, maintaining stability during High-Voltage Ride-Through (HVRT) events.
Optimised Performance and Efficiency
The NOVA System is engineered for optimal energy density and efficiency through its intelligent liquid-cooling design and refined system architecture.
These innovations deliver:
-
Higher Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE) through adaptive cooling algorithms and PCS control.
-
Reduced auxiliary power consumption, improving lifecycle energy yield.
-
Pack- and rack-level optimisation, increasing usable capacity by up to 6 %.
-
Independent rack control, eliminating bias current and enabling precise voltage balancing for continuous, stable power output across the system.
Built for Long-Term Value
From grid to cell, the NOVA platform embodies a safety-first, reliability-focused design philosophy.
Its proven hardware, intelligent monitoring, and modular configuration deliver consistent performance, high availability, and lower lifecycle cost — ensuring that every installation is ready to power Australia’s renewable future safely and efficiently.
GRID FORMING
Delivering Stability for the Renewable Grid
As renewable generation grows, maintaining grid stability has become one of the most critical challenges in modern power systems. Historically, synchronous generators provided the inertia and control necessary to balance the network.
Today, ESI’s NOVA System delivers that same capability through advanced grid-forming technology — enabling stable, reliable, and high-quality power across all grid scenarios.
Stable Grid Connection
The NOVA System supports grid-forming operation across the full Short-Circuit Ratio (SCR) range, maintaining stable grid connection without disconnection or derating.
It delivers high-quality power with active harmonic suppression (THDi < 1%), enabling reliable operation even in weak grids (SCR > 1) while supporting fast and stable fault ride-through events.
Six Core Grid-Forming Capabilities
1. Stable Generation
Three integrated stability enhancements provide exceptional system control:
-
Voltage Stability: 10 ms fast-response voltage support under abnormal conditions, delivering up to 3× reactive current for 10 seconds with < 5% parallel cross current.
-
Frequency Stability: Equivalent inertia response (time constant 3–20 s) with 5 ms inertia start time, ensuring rapid frequency support and improved grid resilience.
-
Phase Angle Stability: Effective suppression of wide-frequency oscillations (0.1–100 Hz), maintaining synchronisation and power quality under dynamic grid events.
2. Stable Transmission
-
150% anti-impact capability enhances system resilience to transient conditions and load impacts.
-
Supports multiple high- and low-voltage fault ride-through events, maintaining continuous service and stable operation during grid disturbances.
3. Stable Electricity Consumption
-
Maintains optimal power quality with THDi < 1% (grid-connected), THDu < 1.5% (islanding), and DCi < 0.5%, ensuring reliable, clean energy delivery to the network.
4. Fast Black Start
-
GW-level black-start capability enables whole-grid restart within minutes, providing rapid system recovery following major outages.
5. Fast Transition
-
Enables seamless transition between grid-connected and islanded operation — 0 ms for planned transitions and 300 ms for unplanned events — avoiding blackout losses and maintaining system continuity.
6. Fast Regulation
-
Provides rapid active and reactive power regulation with response times of 200 ms at plant level and 50 ms at subarray level, improving power quality and system responsiveness.
Built for All Grid Scenarios
The NOVA System’s grid-forming capability is designed for the entire lifecycle — up to 25 years of operation and supports all grid conditions, from strong utility networks to weak, islanded, or hybrid renewable systems.
Through its advanced control architecture, the NOVA platform delivers the stability, flexibility, and performance required to underpin the renewable grids of the future.
